Audiology

Audiology is the science related to the hearing and vestibular systems. Audiology services include a range of hearing tests for all ages (from birth onwards) and vestibular (balance) function tests. We also work with patients with hearing loss to provide appropriate rehabilitation such as hearing aids, implantable devices and management of tinnitus.

We offer a range of diagnostic and rehabilitative audiology services for adults and older children aged six and above. Our services aim to meet the communication needs of the community and address hearing and balance problems.

Diagnostic Audiology Services

We provide a range of hearing tests to identify the degree and type of hearing loss. An audiologist or audiometrician will provide detailed instructions during the test.

Pure Tone Audiometry

Pure Tone Audiometry is the most basic diagnostic hearing test. An audiologist or audiometrician will conduct the test in a sound treated room. The patient will be required to wear headphones and listen to different tones to calculate the degree and type of hearing loss. The objective is to determine the softest level the patient can hear at each of the tones tested. The test usually takes 20 to 30 minutes and the results are plotted as a graph known as an audiogram.

Impedance Audiometry

This test has three sub-tests: Tympanometry, Acoustic Reflex Threshold (ART) test and the Eustachian Tube function (ETF) test.

Impedance Audiometry is used to evaluate the function of the middle ear including the ear drum and Eustachian tube. A small probe will be placed at the opening of the ear and the patient will feel a little air pressure and hear some tones. These are automatic tests and will take only a few minutes.

Speech Audiometry

This test is used to determine the patient’s ability to detect and recognise speech. The patient will be asked to listen to words through a pair of headphones and then repeat the words as they were heard.

Tinnitus Evaluation

Tinnitus refers to having a ringing or humming sound in the ears. For some people, this may be quite disturbing and they will be referred to the tinnitus clinic in Jurong Medical Centre. The clinic is managed by a team of professionals who will evaluate the condition and offer a variety of treatment options that best suits the patient.

Vestibular Assessment/Videonystagmography (VNG) Test

Our inner ear is also responsible for maintaining proper balance. A VNG test can be carried out to evaluate the function of the inner ear and associated nerves. The test requires the patient to follow some pre-test instructions, which will be provided by the nurse if the doctor orders the test.

Rehabilitative Audiological Services

Hearing Aid Related Services: Evaluation, Fitting, Re-programming, Repair and Accessories

After assessing a hearing loss, the doctor will refer the patient back to the audiologist for the provision of hearing aids. We provide detailed counselling on the different types of hearing aids and help the patient to choose the right aids based on the extent of the hearing loss and other needs. The patient is guided from trial to fitting to adjustment, and also educated on repair-related services and accessories such as batteries.

Aided Testing

This test is carried out on patients with hearing loss who are using hearing aids. The objective is to determine how much benefit the user is getting from the hearing aid. The test can be carried out on individual ears or done with both hearing aids on (if two are used). The aim is to plot an audiogram of hearing with the hearing aids.

Ear Implant Programme

Ear implants refer to cochlear implants, middle ear implants and bone anchored hearing aids. We provide comprehensive services for the evaluation, fitting and re-programming of these devices according to your hearing loss.

Tinnitus Management Programme

Tinnitus refers to a ringing sensation in the ear, which may affect sleep and concentration. Our dedicated tinnitus clinic located at Jurong Medical Centre is staffed with professionals who will provide patients with more information on the management of tinnitus.
